How has it come to pass that a childhood illness once seen as an unremarkable “rite of passage” has become a dreaded, dangerous disease that now requires national vigilance and emergency health measures?

Not paying attention. We don't care what they have to say about health, contagion, virus, or anything of this sort in the first place.
Nobody is serious about the messaging anyways. We've got an entire world full of legal and illegal migrants at our doorstep and hardly any of them even bother to wash their hands after using the restroom.

I remember my mother arranging for my brother and I to go play with a friend who had measles. It was to get it over with.
And sure enough we both caught it and went through the few days convalesance required to get healthy again. No biggie.
In today's world I wonder if my mam would be treated as some sort of monster for doing what she did. How times have changed!
